Advancing Student Engagement in Communities:
A Tool Kit for Effective Orientation & Evaluation
To ensure that the needs of students, faculty and the community are met we have included several tool guides that can be used to facilitate discussions revolving around effective planning strategies. Included are tool kits that are helpful for faculty to use with their students and community co-educators.
Tools in this Section for Faculty/Staff:
Student Interest Form
This tool can be used to gauge students’ interests as well as documenting important logistical details. Intentional placements are one way to support a successful partnership.
Community Identified Assets & Needs

Probe community identified assets and needs with this tool. This will be particularly helpful in crafting projects and/or work plans that are mutually beneficial.
Observation Sheet
The tool can be used for the class observations of volunteers to make sure the outreach service is properly occuring.

Help students conceptualize the larger picture of the community organization’s work. Have students use this tool to build an understanding of the organization’s history, mission and needs.
Contract – Community Partnership Agreement
This contract can be used formally between the student and the community co-educator or as a tool to think about student’s work and responsibilities within the organization.

This tool allows students to explore the knowledge, values and skills they will bring to a partnership. Know that students are being exposed to a number of new experiences, ideas and opportunities. They are growing and developing an identity, and most students will appreciate your feedback.

Help students have a clear picture of the work they will be doing. This tool will help students get off on the right track. This will lead to more confidence in their work.
Work Plan
Have students create a short-term and long-term timeline. This tool can help students see how even ‘menial’ tasks fit into the larger picture.
