To ensure that the needs of students, faculty and the community are met we have included several tool guides that can be used to facilitate discussions revolving around effective planning strategies. Included are tool kits that are helpful for the work between community co-educators and students.
Tools in this Section for Community Co-Educators:
Student Application
This tool can be used when students inquire about working with your organization. The tool asks for important details, such as name and email, but also asks why students are interested in your organization, what specific skills and experiences that will contribute their work and for a resume.
Community Identified Assets and Needs

Help students or faculty understand the assets and needs of your organization with this tool. It can help them match their skills with community needs, and it may be helpful when crafting a project or work plan.
Afterschool Program Letter of Understanding

This tool can be used to identify the responsibilities of the after school program and the outreach program.

This is used to apply to become a partner teacher.

This tool can be used by students to help them better understand the community. Students may normally only see particular parts of the community since their routines are limited to a geographically small area.
Getting to Know a Community Organization

Help students conceptualize the larger picture of your organization’s work. Have students use this tool to build an understanding of the organization’s history, mission and needs.
Contract – Community Partnership Agreement
This contract can be used formally between you (as the community co-educator) and the student or as a tool to think about student’s work and responsibilities within your organization.

It can’t be said enough, setting explicit expectations with students is necessary for a successful partnership. Use this tool to help establish those expectations. Also get to know the student on a personal level: why are they here? What drives them to do this type of work?

This tool allows students to explore the knowledge, values and skills they will bring to a partnership. Know that students are being exposed to a number of new experiences, ideas and opportunities. They are growing and developing an identity, and most students will appreciate your feedback.

Help students have a clear picture of the work they will be doing. This tool will help students get off on the right track. This will lead to more confidence in their work.
Work Plan
Have students create a short-term and long-term timeline. This tool can help students see how even ‘menial’ tasks fit into the larger picture.
